This renowned establishment of higher education situated in New Delhi, India is known for its commitment to superior quality teaching learning and excellent health care. It was created as a result of the need to blend traditional medicine with modern science and technology. This has facilitated the offering of different courses in pharmacy, medicine, nursing, allied health sciences, management and humanities.

In 1906 Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed commenced a small Unani clinic in Old Delhi which led to Jamia Hamdard. Having been taught by Hakim Ajmal Khan and inspired by principals of traditional Unani Medicine. Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed sought for an institution that would combine ancient wisdoms of healing with modern scientific knowledge.

Hamdard Dawakhana started in 1962 by Hakim Abdul Hamid who was a son of Hakim Abdul Majeed which began as a manufacturing company specializing on unani medicines.The reign of the company under him saw it thriving well thus becoming a brand name associated with quality healthcare products rooted from unani principles.

1989 marked the realization of Hakim Abdul Hamid’s dream, when Jamia Hamdard University was established as a deemed university by virtue of the Jamia Hamdard Act, 1989 (Act No. 29 of 1989). In memory of Hakim Abdul Hamid, called “Hamdard” that means “sympathizer” in Arabic, the institution was named so to reflect his kind approach to healing and education.

Ever since it started its operations, Jamia Hamdard has been dedicated towards education promotions, research activities and community services within the medical and related areas. The University’s flagship institution is Faculty of Medicine (Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences & Research) which offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in medicine, nursing and allied health sciences.

One key attribute setting apart Jamia Hamdard from other institutions is its dedication to holistic healthcare via inclusive traditional systems like Unani, Ayurveda, Homeopathy plus modern allopathic medicine.
