This institution, often referred to simply as TISS, has played a pivotal role in addressing various social challenges and has earned a reputation for producing socially conscious professionals and researchers.

TISS has its roots in the vision of Dorabji Tata, the pioneer of the Tata Group, who believed in the importance of creating an institution dedicated to social service and development. It was founded as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work, and its initial focus was on training social workers. However, over the years, TISS expanded its academic and research scope to cover a wide range of social science disciplines.

In its early years, TISS primarily offered postgraduate programs in social work and related fields. The institution’s commitment to social welfare and community development was evident from the beginning, as it aimed to produce professionals who could address the pressing social issues of the time, such as poverty, inequality, and social injustice. As TISS continued to evolve, it introduced programs in various social science disciplines, including sociology, social anthropology, social psychology, and social policy.

This expansion reflected TISS’s commitment to interdisciplinary research and education, which remains a hallmark of the institution to this day. TISS has always been deeply engaged in addressing real-world issues. It actively collaborates with government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and international organizations to conduct research and implement projects aimed at improving the lives of marginalized and vulnerable populations. TISS’s research and policy advocacy have played a significant role in shaping social policies in India.

Over the decades, TISS has achieved several milestones and accomplishments. TISS has expanded its reach beyond Mumbai, with campuses in Tuljapur, Hyderabad, Guwahati, and Chennai. Each campus specializes in different areas of social sciences and caters to specific regional needs.TISS has earned a reputation for its research excellence, particularly in areas such as social policy, gender studies, development studies, and human rights. TISS continues to be a pioneer in social work education and practice, producing leaders in the field who have made significant contributions to social welfare and development.TISS has established collaborations with universities and institutions worldwide, fostering global perspectives on social issues and research.

TISS has been at the forefront of advocating for social justice and human rights. It has produced influential research and policy recommendations on issues like caste discrimination, tribal rights, gender equality, and labor rights. The institution’s interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research ensures that students and faculty are equipped to tackle complex social challenges from multiple angles. Today, TISS offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in various social science disciplines. Its commitment to social transformation, social justice, and inclusivity remains as strong as ever.
