Over the years, XLRI has developed its own distinct personality. The first management institute in India, known as XLRI , was established in 1949. The hallmark of this identity is to forge new paths rather than follow well-worn ones; to set benchmarks rather than be benchmarked; to be first to respond to the needs of the people and the country rather than second best; and to undertake risky but necessary tasks that no one has done before. This innovative and pioneering mindset has persisted throughout the history of XLRI.
XLRI has always had a global outlook. We were the first Indian management institution to internationalize its academic offerings. The Jamshedpur Jesuit Society’s Board of Governors, leaders and administrators, teachers and guides, and prominent personalities, entrepreneurs, professors, and stewards have all been a part of it. XLRI seeks to deliver an education that motivates future corporate leaders to address unmet societal issues rather than simply leading to a degree, in keeping with its mission.
Students from XLRI are distinguished from those from other management schools by MAGIS, which stands for “a quest for the best, never to settle down for mediocrity, and always aspire to excel.” They never stop looking for more, for the best of the best. The MAGIS-driven individual either makes the situation happen or makes the most of it; rather than waiting for golden moments, they turn everything they come into contact with into gold.
One of the premier management institutions in India, XLRI, launched a number of management-focused courses for labor unions when it first opened. A two-year, daytime Industrial Relations and Welfare curriculum was launched in 1953; it was eventually renamed Human Resource Management. Since then, XLRI has expanded its infrastructure and added a number of academic programs focused on management to its portfolio in order to fulfill the rising demand from students and position itself as India’s top business school. In 1965, a three-year evening program in business management was initiated, and in 1968, a two-year full-time degree in business management was introduced.
For working executives, XLRI has introduced a number of short-term and long-term programs over the years to assist them to improve their management-centric knowledge and develop into more capable business leaders.

How is the program distributed? Is it comparable to a correspondence course?
This is NOT a correspondence course. This program is made available through broadband infrastructure to provide real-time, synchronous, live instruction to all of the participating students. High quality video, audio, and data transfer are used during the live encounter.
How is the program different from an MBA or PGDBM?
These programs are designed to suit the demands of the moment while also taking into account the resource and time constraints of the aspirants.
Is it possible that I might enrol in XLRI’s normal programs after completing the VIL program?
In order to be eligible for the normal XLRI programs, one must pass an entrance exam and go through a separate selection procedure. Completing any certification course on our platform does not waive this need.
What if I have to go for a trip while the lessons are in session?
From any city you are traveling to, you can choose to attend any Virtual Classroom Location. To ensure that the essential infrastructure is available in case of an unexpected emergency, this is only permitted with prior written consent from both class coordinators.
