History of Banaras Hindu University (BHU)

Banaras Hindu University has a rich and inspiring history. Initially known as Central Hindu College, it was established in 1898 by Annie Besant, an Indian Home Rule-leaguer and Theosophist. Later, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya founded and expanded it into a full-fledged university in 1916.

The foundation ceremony was graced by Mahatma Gandhi, along with renowned scientists Jagadish Chandra Bose and C.V. Raman.
