Xavier School of Management (XLRI), Jamshedpur

Over the years, Xavier School of Management has developed its distinct personality. The first management institute in India, known as XLRI, was established in 1949. The hallmark of this identity is to forge new paths rather than follow well-worn ones; to set benchmarks rather than be benchmarked; to be first to respond to the needs of the people and the country rather than second best; and to undertake risky but necessary tasks that no one has done before. This innovative and pioneering mindset has persisted throughout the history of XLRI.

XLRI has always had a global outlook. We were the first Indian management institution to internationalize its academic offerings. The Jamshedpur Jesuit Society’s Board of Governors, leaders and administrators, teachers and guides, and prominent personalities, entrepreneurs, professors, and stewards have all been a part of it. Xavier School of Management seeks to deliver an education that motivates future corporate leaders to address unmet societal issues rather than simply leading to a degree, in keeping with its mission.

Students from XLRI are distinguished from those from other management schools by MAGIS, which stands for “a quest for the best, never to settle down for mediocrity, and always aspire to excel.” They never stop looking for more, for the best of the best. The MAGIS-driven individual either makes the situation happen or makes the most of it; rather than waiting for golden moments, they turn everything they come into contact with into gold.

One of the premier management institutions in India, Xavier School of Management, launched some management-focused courses for labor unions when it first opened. A two-year, daytime Industrial Relations and Welfare curriculum was launched in 1953; it was eventually renamed Human Resource Management. Since then, XLRI has expanded its infrastructure and added some academic programs focused on management to its portfolio to fulfill the rising demand from students and position itself as India’s top business school. In 1965, a three-year evening program in business management was initiated, and in 1968, a two-year full-time degree in business management was introduced.

For working executives, School of Management has introduced several short-term and long-term programs over the years to assist them in improving their management-centric knowledge and developing into more capable business leaders.

Explore answers to frequently asked questions about the XLRI Jamshedpur Virtual Interactive Learning (VIL) programs — covering learning mode, flexibility, eligibility, and more.

How is the program distributed? Is it comparable to a correspondence course?
This is NOT a correspondence course. The program is delivered via high-speed broadband infrastructure, ensuring real-time, synchronous, live instruction for all participants.

Students interact with faculty and peers through live audio, video, and data sessions, ensuring the same quality of learning as in a physical classroom.
How is the program different from an MBA or PGDBM?
The XLRI VIL programs are uniquely designed to meet the needs of working professionals who seek to upskill without leaving their jobs.

Unlike a traditional MBA or PGDBM, these courses are modular, flexible, and time-efficient, while maintaining XLRI’s academic rigor and industry relevance.
Is it possible that I might enroll in XLRI’s normal programs after completing the VIL program?
No. To enroll in XLRI’s regular full-time programs, candidates must clear the entrance exam and participate in the standard selection process.

Completion of any VIL certification program does not provide direct entry or exemption into regular XLRI courses.
What if I have to go on a trip while the lessons are in session?
Students who need to travel during class sessions can attend from any authorized Virtual Classroom Location across India.

However, this requires prior written approval from both the class coordinators to ensure the necessary infrastructure and access are available.
