In 1906, Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed commenced a small Unani clinic in Old Delhi, laying the foundation for what would later become Jamia Hamdard University. Having been taught by Hakim Ajmal Khan and inspired by the principles of traditional Unani Medicine, he envisioned an institution that would integrate ancient healing wisdom with modern scientific understanding.
In 1962, his son, Hakim Abdul Hamid, founded Hamdard Dawakhana, a manufacturing company specializing in Unani medicines. Under his leadership, the organization flourished, becoming a trusted brand name in quality healthcare products grounded in Unani traditions.
The dream of Hakim Abdul Hamid materialized in 1989 with the establishment of Jamia Hamdard University as a deemed university under the Jamia Hamdard University Act, 1989 (Act No. 29 of 1989). The term “Hamdard,” meaning “sympathizer” in Arabic, was chosen to symbolize his compassionate approach to healing and education.
Since its inception, Jamia Hamdard University has been dedicated to promoting education, research, and community service across the medical and allied fields. Its flagship institution, the Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (HIMSR), offers comprehensive undergraduate and postgraduate programs in medicine, nursing, and allied health sciences.
A distinctive feature of Jamia Hamdard is its integrated approach to holistic healthcare, which combines Unani, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, and Allopathic systems of medicine.
